I recently updated my Windows Xp. And after installing the updates when i re-started my laptop, i saw a message
" windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close we are sorry for the inconvenience ".
This made me unable to operate my windows XP. Hence i followed these instructions. This might be helpful for you now or later.
For this i opted for a system restore i.e. restoring a previous session of windows.
Step 1). Start windows in safe mode.
to start windows xp in safe mode just restart the laptop and immediately keep pressing F8 key (You should press F8 while PC is booting, and not after the windows has booted). It will give you option, select the "Safe mode with command prompt" option with arrow keys. Press enter. This will start your windows in safe mode with command prompt.
Select your appropriate windows and login with an ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT.
Step 2). Launch system restore using command prompt
After you have logged in a command prompt will open utomatically.
Type this command
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
system restore utility will open, then select a previous session (date & time) and start the system restore. While restoring windows will shut down. And once windows is done with system restore you will be able to operate your windows again.
You may now stop automatically windows update by going to Start-> Control Panel-> System-> Automatic Update (tab) -> Turn off Automatic updates
Check the Turn off Automatic update button. (this will stop windows from automatically updating).
Hope this is helps you!
